♰ BASICSCharacter's name: Gideon Nav
Canon: The Locked Tomb
Canon point: immediately after her death in Gideon the Ninth
Age: 18
Background:
here!Abilities:
• Exceptional swordswoman (particularly with a longsword, but not bad with a rapier!)
♰ SUITABILITYStrengths:
• Resilience: Gideon has been steeped in various forms of horror for her entire life. Indentured servitude, strange and isolated cults, creepy old tombs, necromancy- she was always surrounded by the macabre. Animated skeletons are so normal to her that she’d find it strange
not to see any. She also lived among people who both feared and despised her, and yet despite all this she manages to maintain a strong sense of self and the will to keep moving forward no matter what horrors she encounters. Whilst this resilience sometimes manifests as a stubborn, recalcitrant personality, on a deeper level she maintains a positive outlook even when things are at their most dire. She believes in herself and her own abilities, and she will keep trying no matter how many times she is knocked down. Many of the terrors of the game’s setting might be new to her, but her resilience will set her in good stede!
• Physical strength: Gideon isn’t just mentally strong, but physically strong to boot! She spent the majority of her time physically preparing herself to join the Cohort (military), and as a result she is a powerfully-built woman who can stand her ground in a fight. She’s highly skilled with a sword, and will keep fighting even when grievously injured if she has something to protect.
• Resourceful: Gideon would be quick to tell you that she does her best thinking with her biceps. Despite this, she has been shown to be both cunning and resourceful. Her escape attempts may have failed, but she was up against a highly intelligent ‘adversary’ who was willing to do anything she had to in order to keep her. During her final escape attempt she was able to intercept messages, forge signatures, and charter a shuttle to get her off-world, her plan only discovered due to the unforeseen circumstances that kick off the series. She may be the first to play down her own intelligence, but she’s more capable than she lets on.
• Protective/compassionate: despite her dire upbringing and her friendless, isolated existence, she is nonetheless willing to open her heart to those around her and form connections with others. She will be ready and willing to forge the strong relationships with her fellow Restless.
• Funny: everyone likes a girl who can make them laugh when shit hits the fan, right? br>
Weaknesses:
• Impetuous: Gideon has a gung-ho personality, and she loves a good fight. This can sometimes lead her into doing things without thinking them through, throwing herself headlong into violence even when there might be a better, less hazardous way forward. This is exemplified when she and Harrow come up against a hulking monster made of bones. She sees it. She sees its arms look a bit like swords. She wants to fight it. She may be strong and capable, but there will no doubt be creatures to encounter in the game setting that far outmatch her. Chances of her getting into trouble? Extremely high.
• Inexperienced: In some ways, Gideon has experienced more than any 18 year old should ever have to endure, but in other ways she has lived a very sheltered existence. The Ninth cut off from the other Houses, and she had very little social interaction. Because of this there are lot of things that she simply doesn’t know. Whilst her resilience may help to balance this out, there will no doubt be times where she is left disorientated and confused by even mundane aspects of the game’s setting. Her inexperience can also turn her compassion into a liability; she can be easily taken in by even basic acts of kindness. This can lead to manipulation and being taken advantage of.
Fears:
• Drearburh: the site of her childhood suffering, this is the inner sanctum of the Ninth House. Being made to walk through the bone-strewn doors of Drearburh was enough to make her scream as a child, and she avoided it at all costs even as an adult. Whilst this is a fear related to a specific location, it’s one that she could likely manage by facing up to it. It’s something that might make an interesting setting for a Harrowing!
• Failure: Although she bounces back from her failures to escape the Ninth they still cut her deeply and hurt her bitterly. Her last failure threw her into a depression, and even worse than failing to save herself is a failure to save someone else. When she fails to protect Jeannemarie, it’s one of the very few times in canon that we see her confidence in herself truly shaken. The only way to combat this fear is through atonement and regrouping; it might hit her hard, but she’ll come back again, more determined to protect those who remain. br>
Desires:
• Harrow’s affections and admiration: she already has this in actuality, but it’s confusing and complex for them both!
• To get laid.
• To feel as though she belongs to something big and meaningful/a sense of connection to something.
• To join the Cohort and win lots of prizes and the admiration of cute girls Obviously this will have become unattainable to her, but she has always wanted it!
Regrets:
• Failing to protect Jeannemary and issac.
• Falling for an ancient weirdo who murdered her friends.
• Dying without knowing the full story behind where she came from.
Tethers:
• Her longsword. Whilst she loves it in part because she just really loves swords, on a deeper level it has always represented freedom to her. Training with her sword, being allowed to do this despite her servitude, the fact that it’s the one thing that truly belongs to her in a life where almost nothing is really hers, means it takes on a symbolic significance as well as a practical one.
• Drearburh/the Ninth: a complicated one because she fears and despises this place, but she also comes to realise at the end of the first book that she is more deeply intertwined with it than she cares to admit. It is a convoluted, unwilling attachment, but a strong one nonetheless.
• A hazmat suit, to represent her mother: Gideon is strongly attached to the idea of her, and the mystery surrounding her own existence.
